Environmental degradation leads directly to poverty. The U.N. estimates that more refugees are displaced by environmental disasters than by war. There are currently more than 25 million climate refugees (ecologically induced migrants), and experts have projected that number will double within the next five years to over 50 million. Several organizations like the IPCC, Red Cross and The Christian Monitor estimate that between 150 million and 1 billion climate refugees will be displaced within the next four decades.
Minor changes in daily behaviour can make a lasting contribution to protecting the environment and therefore fighting poverty. Some examples of little things that everyone can do include saving power by using energy-saving light bulbs, switching off electrical appliances completely and saving water while showering. Even one minute less in the shower every day can add up to large gains for the environment in terms of the electricity used to pump water into our homes and conserving the water itself.
Acting for the environment means acting against poverty!
